Flip-N-Target DIY Tactical model

delivered target stand

DIY Target stand as delivered

all parts included
Quickly opening the box revealed space efficient packing of the components.

everything is there
A quick inventory confirmed that everything cited in the concise instruction sheets was present.

I did notice that only a single folding cardboard target backer was included in the kit unlike the assembled (and more expensive) models which include three.

assembly is easy
A review of the assembly instructions confirmed that the process should be quick and simple. So I grabbed a screwdriver and got started.

Rather than recap the process here, I'll refer you to the instructions which are readily found on the web site. (here)

completed assembly
All that remains here is for a cardboard target backer to be stapled to the frame. As only one is provided, I'm using it as a template for me to cut a few strips from boxes I have available to use instead.

As many others have done I entered the generous monthly product giveaway on the flip-n-target.com web site. Frankly the description of the product as being user repairable plus the convenience of parts available for ordering had tweaked my interest. My previous experience with a portable stand had been with an aluminum framed flat folding job back in the early '90s. Errant shots from my young sons had destroyed the frame rendering the not inexpensive unit useless. Still I hesitated. The pre-assembled stand with shipping was at a price point that gave me cause for pause. Plus I had been using improvised target holders (cardboard boxes weighed down with wood scraps) successfully for a long time. But retiring and replacing an AWD SUV with a mid-sized sedan was now going to make hauling big boxes problematic given the reduced cargo space.

So imagine my surprise when I received an e-mail from Todd, the CEO of Flip-N-Targets. He solicited my input on the possibility of his expanding his product line to include knock down DIY target stand kits at a significant savings over the existing preassembled target stands. Ultimately our discussion resulted in Todd offering to send a Tactical DIY unit to me for my evaluation. I readily agreed to accept his generosity.

A few days after receiving a shipping notification from Todd, UPS delivered a 17 pound box containing the DIY Tactical stand. I noted the carton handle which undoubtedly made handling easier for the men in brown as well as minimizing potential damage. I also got a kick out of the printing on the box which revealed that the knock down kit was packaged in a cut down box from the preassembled units.

Observations:

  • No question that it will be easily transported to local shooting spots given its flat fold down design.
  • Unlike the aluminum frame I have previous experience with, this unit quite obviously will be easy to maintain and repair.
  • Assembly is quick and easy to accomplish.
  • The price point of the DIY kit versus the preassembled unit is much more attractive.

Suggestions:

  • Slightly expand the packaging to include three target backers like the preassembled unit.
  • Add a cheap fiberglass drawstring sandbag for the customer to use to weight down the frame against blowing over from winds.
  • Adjust the DIY product line cost to reflect these minor changes in the kit.

I wish to thank Todd for his generosity in providing me this product gratis. As an aside I first heard of Flip-N-Targets through a gun forum where another member won one of the monthly give-away prizes. That gent posted that he too was quite pleased with the unit he had. I'm sure this program has earned Todd not only good will but new customers as well.

Flip-N-Target Sportsman is AWESOME ! My son and I like to run down to the range and do some shooting when he gets home from school but we don't have too much time before he goes to swim team. Flip-N-Target is easy to toss into the car, sets up fast, and can be taken down just as quickly. It's also "man enough" to take the occasional errent round that new shooters (and old ones, too) can dish out. Everybody that sees it thinks it's great too when I show them how easy it is to set up and take down.

I also sent your web address to my local gun dealer. I have not been to his shop lately, but hope he has contacted you.

Thanks again for a great product ! My son and I appreciate it very much.

I noticed that you don't have many photos of your target stand out in the field, so I thought I'd take advantage of a nice Nevada afternoon and take some photos for you.

Compact. I prop mine up and bungee the legs to the side of the truck. This way the dogs won't step on it.
Loosen the four thumb screws and unfold it.
Flip it open,
Angle the target face the way you want it, and re-tighten the four thumb screws and you're ready to go.

This is about the maximum angle you can go (in either direction).
For windy days, you may want to spread the legs out.
This is about as high as it will go. I'm 5'10" and this Pro stand is about as tall as me in this position.
You can adjust this stand's position for any number of scenarios.

Here it is in the opposite position.
Here's a close up of the Pivot Block (2x) assembly and that's what a 9mm round does to the Horizontal piece.

While I was out there, I ran into another shooter. He was impressed with my stand, but wondered how long the wood would hold up. Well, I wouldn't call myself an expert shooter, but I've shot at least 1000 rounds at this stand so far, and the wood has only taken one 9mm hit in the lower horizontal piece which didn't phase it one bit. You'd have to be "way off" to hit the legs or spreaders, and aren't they the only metal pieces on most metal stands anyway? Since I live here in Gardnerville, NV and know the guys at Flip-N-Target, I decided to find out and invited this other shooter to join me... he just watched.

I brought a S&W .38 spcl and a box of 158gr +P ammo. I set up the stand in an obviously popular place judging from the trash.
Since I already had one 9mm round go through the Horizontal from a previous outing, I chose it as my test piece.
This is 7 rounds (out of 20? I hate that gun.) through the Horizontal piece from 10 feet.
The stand is still solid! Splinters, yes, but still very usable. Unless you drill numerous rounds through the same spot like this, the stand should handle many strays before needing any replacement parts.

I'm 5'10" and I'm standing next to my Pro target stand.
Maybe if we all used Flip-N-Target stands, we wouldn't see as much of this crap!?

The Flip-N-Target held up really well at the range today. I won't say any names, but someone threw a round a little high into the top support beam but it didn't affect the integrity of the stand at all. And I have to say, the Zombie target + Flip-N-Target stand make a good match.

The legs stayed where we put them and transport to and from the range was easy as expected. It was a lot easier than bringing a stand, wood, cardboard and targets to the range. This system is definitely a go!

Used and abusedUsed and abusedI took the target holder my mom purchased for me as a gift last month out for it's first use today. I am thrilled with it. Haven't been out to the range in a while so my aim was a bit off. Out of 209 rounds fired I hit the wood 10 times with .30-06, 8mm Mauser and 7.62x54R ammo and it never even flinched. It's still solidly together and ready for another range trip. I've attached 2 pics so you could see the abuse it can take.

Thanks again for the great product!
